An American man shot and killed his ex-wife and stepson for wasting electricity by leaving the lights on for too long.
Michael Williams, 47, of Florida, is accused of killing Marsha Williams and her adult son, 28-year-old Robert Adams, in their shared home.
According to investigators, the suspect became enraged at his family’s Volusia County home and told sheriff’s deputies that he had shot and killed them when they attacked him.
“This is completely absurd. “This is an argument about electricity,” said Volusia County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Brian Henderson.
“He was concerned that they were leaving the lights on in the house, so he went outside and installed a lock on the box outside the house, which Marsha and her son cut.”
According to investigators, the group got into a fight on Sunday evening, September 18, after which Mr Williams called 911.
“I had my weapon on me, and while they were attacking me, I had to, basically, shoot them,” he allegedly told the operator. “Did you shoot him?” the operator inquired.
“I shot him and his mother,” Mr Williams admitted.
Mr. Williams was waiting for deputies when they arrived and surrendered. The victims’ bodies were discovered inside the horn, along with the stepson’s two unharmed children, ages five and six.
The suspect claims that he shot in self-defense after being attacked.
“He claims that these two assaulted him violently. “I don’t see anything on this guy right now,” Chief Deputy Henderson stated.
“This does not appear to me to be a violent attack warranting multiple shots.”
According to officials, the couple had been married for ten years before divorcing in June, but they were still living together at the property.
Deputies had previously been called to the home five times to deal with verbal disturbances.
The suspect is being held in the Volusia County Jail without bond.
